Toddler: Frogs

Toddlers love frogs, too!

I used much of the preschool frog storytime program to design this toddler plan, including the book I read with these younger ones.

Welcome: Hello Everybody
(clap hands on lap and then together, clap twice on the word “you”)
Hello everybody, how are you?
Hello everybody, how are you?
It’s such a lovely day, I’m so glad you came to play,
Hello everybody, how are you?

Fingerplay: Open Shut Them (with shakers for last verse)
Open shut them, open shut them
Give a little clap, clap, clap
Open Shut them, open shut them
Lay them in your lap, lap, lap.

Creep them, crawl them
Creep them, crawl them
Right up to your chin, chin, chin
Open wide your little mouth
But do not let them in!

Shake them, shake them
Shake them, shake them
Shake them just like this this this
Roll them, roll them
Roll them, roll them
And blow a little kiss!
Muach! (blow kiss with hand)

Fingerplay: Five Green and Speckled Frogs
Five green and speckled frogs (hold five fingers above other forearm)
Sat on a speckled log
Eating some most delicious bugs (yum, yum!)
[rub tummy]
One jumped into the pool
Where it was nice and cool,
Then there were four green speckled frogs. (glub, glub)

4 green and speckled frogs…
3 green and speckled frogs…
2 green and speckled frogs…
1 green and speckled frog…

Book: The Wide-mouthed Frog

With the toddlers, I focused on concepts like color and size and the names of animals. After reading this book, we hopped liked frogs and talked like frogs.

Movement: Bubbles!
1 little 2 little 3 little bubbles
4 little, 5 little, 6 little bubbles
7 little 8 little, 9 little bubbles
10 little bubbles go pop, pop, pop.

To bring the group back together from bubble time, I handed out these sweet pipe cleaner flies I discovered on Mel’s Desk! Pipe Cleaner FliesThey were easy to make with materials I had on hand, so I wasn’t worried when they got bent out of shape, put in a little one’s mouth or went home, gripped in the small fingers of storytime regulasr. We sang a song about frog food and flew our flies all over.

Song: Shoo Fly

Shoo fly, don’t bother me
Shoo fly, don’t bother me
Shoo fly, don’t bother me
I belong to somebody!

Song: Mm, Ah Went The Little Green Frog
Mm, Nn went the little green frog one day. (make sign for frog)
(stick out tongue and catch food)
Mm, Nn went the little green frog!
Mm, Nn  went the little green frog one day.
And they all went mm, mm, nn!

We all know frogs go (clap) shana, na ,na, na
(clap) Shana, na, na, na,
(clap) Shana, na, na, na,
We know frogs go (clap) shana, na ,na, na.
They don’t go mm, mm, ah.

Action Song: Ring Around the Rosie (group forms a circle)
Ring (or skip or hop, etc.) around the rosie (move as a group to the left or right)
Pocket full of posies
Ashes, ashes, we all fall down! (squat down on ground)

The cows are in the meadow (slap hands on floor while staying down on the ground)
Eating buttercups
Thunder, lightning,
We all jump up! (jump up)

Goodbye: Tickle the Clouds
Tickle the Clouds.  Tickle Your Toes.
Turn Around,
And Tickle Your Nose!Plastic Beads Reach down low. Reach up High.
Storytime’s over, wave goodbye!

Play: Stacking cups and large plastic snap/lock beads

Early literacy tip: Looking for different uses of one item encourages creativity and inventiveness, one of the skills that helps children be ready to learn. (Credit: The Early Literacy Kit: A Handbook and Tip Cards by Betsy Diamant-Cohen and Saroj Nadkarni Ghoting)
